How Much Fitter Am I?

Posted on 2010/10/03. Filed under: Cycling | Tags: , , , , |

I was never ‘unfit’, just average.  I was overweight, but saying “muscle is heavier than fat” and “BMI is a rule of thumb” and other similar excuses.  Then, because of riding a bike (before I started cycling, if you know what I mean), I got a bit fitter and lost some weight.  Then I got [...]

Tour of Britain 2010 GPS

Posted on 2010/09/15. Filed under: Cycling | Tags: , , , , |

Lots of pro-riders use GPS doohickeys to track their performance in a race.  I’m tracking down what I can of these from this years Tour of Britain, so I can follow the routes myself (maybe) and see just how poorly I compare. Stage 1 – Rochdale to Blackpool Unnamed Sigma Sport Specialized rider Stage 2 [...]

Speedy Sunday

Posted on 2010/09/07. Filed under: Cycling | Tags: , , , , , |

I went for a ride on Sunday (to be expected).  It was based on one of my Garmin stored courses that I occasionally use to compare myself to previous efforts, but this time I added a few loops for distance.  It was a windy day, and none of the routes I had stored that would [...]

Tour of Britain 2010

Posted on 2010/08/31. Filed under: Cycling | Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

The Tour of Britain is starting soon, and for the first time I’m intending to watch it for real (even though everyone says the best place to see a bike race is on TV). Stage 3 ends in Swansea, with a notable feature being Constitution Hill.  My in-laws live in Swansea, whenever we visit them [...]

Catch up (again)

Posted on 2010/06/05. Filed under: Cycling | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

I’ve let more than a week go by again.  Saturday last it looked like rain in the afternoon, so I extended the return journey from the papershop in the morning.  This seems a good way to get a ride in and I’ll try and do it more often.  I managed to come home from Milton [...]

Saturday morning paper shop ride

Posted on 2010/05/15. Filed under: Cycling | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Last night I had 77km left to meet this weeks Garmin Connect goal.  I normally do 22km to get the newspaper on a Saturday morning, and I expect to do 52km tomorrow with the other half (she’s only rowing once), which would leave me an annoying 3km short of the goal.  The easiest seeming thing [...]

How to make hills harder

Posted on 2010/05/15. Filed under: Bike changes, Cycling | Tags: , , , , , , , , |

It’s nearly properly summer now, so I’ve decided to try and get a mid-week ride for the sake of riding in.  Hopefully this will stop me from getting to Sunday with most of my Garmin Connect weekly goal still to do.  So, I signed up to Map My Ride (Bikely is too unreliable now) and planned [...]

3000 mile service, and failed ride

Posted on 2010/05/10. Filed under: Bike changes, Cycling | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

Well, between 3050 and 3200 mile service (Tricross odometer currently on 3119.5 miles).  On Thursday I finally got around to changing the chain and cassette on the Tricross (they we’re still the originals).  It now has a SRAM PC971 chain and Shimano HG50 32-11 cassette.  No difference in gearing, just in good condition again.  I [...]

Whittlesea to Milton

Posted on 2010/05/02. Filed under: Cycling | Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

Yesterday I did my first ‘get the train somewhere and cycle back’ ride since I moved to Cambridge, from Whittlesea (last stop before Peterborough, so avoiding urban roads) to Milton (village on the north edge of Cambridge with a nice cafe, always good to end rides at).  The route is here, on Garmin Connect.  Planning [...]

Soap Scum

I did a more or less tuned to meeting the weeks Garmin Connect goal ride last Sunday (route here).  Originally I’d intended to use the perimeter road of an old airbase that I’d spotted on a map as a circuit to do some laps, but when I got there it was a private road so I [...]
